(8vo) 22.5x13.5 cm (8¾x5¼"), modern half morocco & cloth, spine lettered in gilt. 32d Congress, 1st Session, Ex. Doc. No. 81. Senate Edition. Graff notes this as "The first reconnoissance of the Colorado River. Derby's fame lies in his writings as John Phoenix and Squibob." The expedition took place in the period of November 1850 through March 1851. The significant map is "Reconnaissance of the Colorado River made by the order of Maj. Gen. P.F. Smith..." measuring 56.4x27.5 cm. (22¼x10¾"). Provenance: Heaston, 3/00 References: Farquhar, Colorado River and Grand Canyon, no. 15; Graff 1059.
