ABERT, James W. (1820-1897). Report of the Secretary of War, Communicating, in Answer to a Resolution of the Senate, a Report and Map of the Examination of New Mexico . 30th Congress, 1st Session. Senate Executive Document, no. 23. Washington, D.C., 1848. 8 o (248 x 158 mm). 24 lithographed plates and large folding map of the Territory of New Mexico by C.B. Graham (some spotting). Original yellow printed wrappers (rebacked, edges reinforced on verso); yellow cloth folding portfolio. Provenance : R.S. Baldwin (ink inscription dated 1848 on front wrapper presenting the book to a college library). FIRST EDITION, Senate issue. "Because the plates were bound together following the text, Camp believed this Senate Document was the first edition of the report, which also appeared in the House edition of Emory's report [see previous lot for the Senate issue]" (Wagner-Camp-Becker). Streeter notes that the map is most likely the second issue of the first printed map of New Mexico made public by the War Department, the first issue having appeared without the name of a lithographer with the Abert report when it was published with Emory's Notes of a Military Reconnaissance . The lithographed plates, attributed to Abert himself, include views of Santa Fe, Fort Marcy, San Felipe, the Pueblos, Indians, etc. The text describes Abert's trip from Fort Leavenworth over the Santa Fe Trail via Bent's Fort, his survey of the northern part of New Mexico and return via the Trail. The map is the most detailed survey of New Mexico then extant. Flake 726; Graff 5; Howes A-11; Pilling 2; Rader 3344; Rittenhouse 2 ("A basic SFT document"); Sabin 57; Streeter I:168; Wagner-Camp-Becker 143; Wheat Mapping the Transmississippi West 532.
