ROBERT SWEET (1783-1835) Cistineae. The order of Cistus, or the Rock-rose; illustrated by coloured figures & descriptions of all the distinct species, and... varieties... in the gardens of Great Britain. London: Tilling for James Ridgway, 1825-1830. 8 (235 x 145mm). 112 hand-coloured engraved plates by S.Watts or Weddell after J., M. or W. Hart or Mrs Margaret Read Brown. Contemporary calf (rebacked, red morocco lettering-piece). FIRST EDITION originally issued in bi-monthly parts between July 1825 and January 1830. Born in Devon in 1783, Sweet worked as a horticulturalist for various firms situated in or near London from 1810 until 1826. He had published a number of botanical works before this date, but after 1826 he concentrated almost entirely on botanical productions, including the present work. The Cistaceae or Rockrose family of flowering shrubs is prized by gardeners for its' showy rose-like flowers. They are widely spread and occur in Europe, west and central Asia, north Africa, north and south America and the Cape Verde Islands.
