ROBERTS, David (1796-1864). Egypt & Nubia ... with historical descriptions by William Brockedon London: F.G. Moon, 1846-1849. 3 volumes in 2, 2° (624 x 448mm). Three tinted lithographic titles and 121 plates (61 full-page, 60 half-page) by Louis Haghe after Roberts, one engraved map. (Images of about 20 plates affected by spotting, in only a few cases heavy, some further spotting and occasional staining of blank margins.) Contemporary red morocco, covers ruled in blind, upper covers and spines gilt-lettered, gilt inner dentelles with hatched lines and strawberry roll-tool, gilt edges (joints and corners rubbed, a few scuff marks to covers, spines frayed at head and foot), in modern wood stand. Originally published in 20 parts, most parts containing 6 plates, Egypt and Nubia was published separately from Roberts's Holy Land , while being the product of the same tour to the Near East in 1839-1840, and in every respect integral with the earlier work. The views of Egypt, in particular, contain many of his most potent images of the East. In this issue, the half-page plates and the descriptive text are on separate leaves. Abbey Travel 272; Tooley 402. (2)
