ROWLANDSON, THOMAS. An Album of 50 drawings and watercolors of antique busts, one signed with initials, the majority inscribed and with accompanying descriptive text by the artist on separate sheets mounted opposite the drawings. 4to, near contemporary half morocco, some rubbing to edges and covers, 50 drawings, each approximately 183 x 114 mm. (7 x 4 in.), mostly pencil, pen and grey or brown ink, some with touches of red ink, two with watercolor, tipped in on pages of the album -- [With:] Elagabule accompanied by descriptive text. A number of albums containing studies after antique by Rowlandson are recorded. Two were presented to the British Museum by E. Gilbertson along with other Rowlandson drawings from his collection between 1885 and 1901. Three were in Mrs. E. Nairn's sale at Christie's London (25 July 1938, lot 45). Comparable drawings of antique sculpture, all on sheets approximately the same size as those in the present album, are in the Mellon collection 345 (1-35).
