Vol.I additionally inscribed "To C. T. Spedding with ever kind thoughts from E. H. Shackleton March 1921." Spedding was a shipmate of Shackleton's before the 1914-18 war, and he contributed to his exploration funds. Spedding worked for the Cunard Line (he was Commodore Purser on the Aquitania for a while) and rose to Commander in the Royal Navy during the 1914-18 war. (3)
