Shackleton (Sir Ernest Henry, 1874-1922). The Heart of the Antarctic, Being the Story of the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-1909, 2 volumes, 1st edition, 1909, half-title and photogravure frontispiece to each, 12 colour plates, photo plates, 3 folding maps and folding panorama contained in rear pocket of volume 2, errata slip tipped in to volume 2 before page 1, pencil marginalia, believed to be in Shackleton's hand, to margins of pp. 249 & 251, further vertical pencil lines to margins of pp. 247-50, 253 and 258 (Biology chapter by James Murray the marginalia concerning sections on the Adelie penguins), top edges gilt, remainder rough-trimmed, original blue cloth gilt with pictorial upper covers lettered in silver, slightly rubbed and spine to volume 2 faded, 4to. The marginalia are as follows: page 249 line 2, the word Nimrod is crossed through and 'ship' written in the margin; on the same page the sentence on lines 7 and 6 from the bottom has been struck through: 'He has a conscience, at least a human conscious, i.e., the fear of being found out.'; page 251, at the end of the first paragraph concerning the rearing of chicks and a parent bird going back to sea, is written in the margin: 'then to me where found after including it'. Included with the lot is a press photograph of Shackleton and a letter to the owner from Jan Piggott, Keeper of Archives, Dulwich College, 5th December 2000, in reply to a query about the marginalia in this copy and concluding, 'It is hard to be absolutely certain, but the nature of the margin comments and the handwriting makes one think they are by Shackleton' (with original postmarked envelope). Provenance: Acquired by the owner from a bookseller in 2000 who told the buyer that the books had come from an auction of Shackleton family items. At the time the marginalia were unknown to both parties and only discovered later after purchase. (4)
