SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe (1792-1822). Autograph letter signed to Messrs Brookes and Co., Bankers, Florence, 23 September 1819, written on blue grey paper, one page, 4to , address leaf, seal (scorchmark, seal tear, 2 small holes in second leaf), tipped into an album, morocco-backed. A request to Brookes (in London) to honor a bill for £200 drawn on Messrs Webb and Co. of Leghorn, and reminding them of an earlier and so far unanswered request for £100 in 'Messrs Remies's circular notes'. Shelley required the £200 for Henry Reveley for the furtherance of his project for the building of a steam boat, which was intended to ply between Marseilles, Genoa and Leghorn. Shelley was full of enthusiasm for the scheme and its success would have made Reveley's fortune, but the design was abandoned when close to completion. Henry Reveley, the son of Mrs Gisborne by her first marriage, had been educated in Italy and had considerable talent, but all his projects were doomed to failure. Shelley wrote to Maria Gisborne three weeks later, 'I am tortured until this money comes from London'.
