Sir David Baird 's (3rd Bart.) Queen Adelaide medal, in gold, the obverse inscribed GUILELMO IIII D.G., BRITANNIAR REGI F.D., the reverse inscribed ADELAIDE, REGINA, CUDI, JUSSIT, MDCCCXXX, encased in crystal within a gold band inscribed SIR DAVID BAIRD OF NEWBYTH, BART., 28TH. SEPT. 1859, metal suspension formed by a crossed clubs & ball design, diameter 2.9cm., 1 1/8in. The third Baronet Sir David Baird (1832-193) emulated the achievement of his father by becoming Captain of the R&A in 1859 and was presented with the traditional medal. In 1838 John Murray Belshes told the Spring Meeting that the Dowager Queen Adelaide had consented to become Patroness of the R&A and at that year's Autumn Meeting he announced that Her Majesty had presented a handsome medal as a mark of her approbation - with a request that it should be worn by the captain on all public occasions for the purpose of distinguishing his office. From 1853 onwards the Captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club has been awarded the Queen Adelaide Medal for playing a single shot in the challenge for the Silver Club by the act of the driving in ceremony.
