Title: SOLD BY PRIVATE TREATY Manuscript Letter Signed by John C. Calhoun as Secretary of War, to newly appointed Indian Agent for Missouri, Benjamin O’Fallon Author: Calhoun, John C. Place: Washington Publisher: Date: March 8, 1819 Description: 2 pages, in ink, on 4-page lettersheet.. The letter is in a secretarial hand, the signature that of Calhoun. Quarto. John C. Calhoun in his capacity as Secretary of War, writes to Benjamin O’Fallon, the young Indian Agent for Missouri, and nephew of William Clark “…You have been appointed to an Indian Agency which will require an uncommon degree of industry, discretion and abilities. The important military movements which are contemplated on the Missouri will be greatly facilitated or impeded by the friendship or hostility of the Indians. This disposition will be principally influenced by the conduct of the Agent, and you will accordingly spare no pains to acquire their friendship and confidence. It is confidently expected that these important objects can be effected by a proper combination of kindness and firmness. If the Indians are properly treated it is probable that they will not be disposed to hostilities unless excited by the foreign or illicit traders who either have or may desire the monopoly of the fur trade. No measure ought to be taken to excite the suspicion of such traders or to come in collision with them till the military posts are firmly established at which time you will give notice that all trade except that which is duly licensed by government will be prohibited under the penalty provided by law… It will be proper for you to precede the military expedition to prepare the Indians for it, by a representation of our pacifick views and by a judicious distribution of presents. To effect this object you are authorized with the approbation of Gov. Clark to purchase goods suitable for presents, not exceeding value $5,000… It is probable that Maj. Long with his party will precede the military expedition. Should this be the fact, you will agreeably to this request accompany him, as it will afford an excellent opportunity to prepare the Indians for the expedition…” Provenance: Descended in the Benjamin O’Fallon family. Lot Amendments Condition: Some soiling and light staining, partially separating along main fold with a few small holes, close to but not touching the signature, very good. Item number: 220185
