SOLVYNS, Frans Baltasar. The Costume of Hindostan , London: J. Hayes for Edward Orme 1807 [text watermarked 1803-4, plates watermarked 1821]. 2° (365 x 264mm), 60 hand-coloured line- or stipple-engraved or etched plates by Scott or T. Vivares after Solvyns (light spotting and browning on text, occasional light spotting or marking on plates), contemporary straight-grained olive-green morocco gilt, the boards with borders of broad blind floral rolls within broad gilt floral rolls, enclosed by broad and narrow gilt fillets, roll-tooled gilt turn-ins, the flat spine gilt in compartments, titled in one, the others ornately decorated (spine and small areas of boards slightly faded, extremities a little rubbed, a few scuff marks on boards), g.e. Provenance : Rochfort Astle Sperling (armorial bookplate, pencilled gift inscription on title dated 1877). Abbey Travel 429; Colas 2766; Lipperheide Ld9: cf . Brunet V, 433 (note); Tooley 461 ([1804-5] edition); Vinet 2350 (1804 edition). AN ATTRACTIVE COPY IN A CONTEMPORARY BINDING, the front flyleaf watermarked '1820'. 'The book is based on Solvyn's earlier work containing 250 plates, published at Calcutta in 1799, ... The Manners, Customs and Dresses of the Hindoos [...]. William Orme made water-colour copies from Solvyns's originals, for the engravers. These copies are much better drawn than Solvyns's originals, and the [...] stipple engravings are correspondingly an improvement on Solvyns's etchings' (Abbey). It was first published in parts with an undated title page, followed by editions in 1804 and 1807: however, it popularity ensured that it stayed in print for many years after these dates, and copies with plates watermarked 1832 are known ( cf . Christie's King Street, sale 8 April 1987, lot 114).
