Semena, 1849-53. 4 o text volume (315 x 235 mm) and 7 atlas folios (515 x 375 mm). Text volume in Russian. Chromolithographic title-pages, contents leaves and 508 plates after F.G. Solntsev, legends in Russian and French. (Some occasional foxing.) Green morocco, elaborately gilt, tan morocco lettering-pieces, edges gilt, by Wright. FIRST EDITION of this magnificent production, showing decorative elements, costumes, arms and armor and monuments. This was the first monumental publication of ancient articles and works of art in Russia, with textual descriptions accompanying the plates. Stroganov (1794-1882) was a state official and archaeologist, whose early years were spent as an active soldier. From 1837-74 he was president of the Society of Russian History and Antiquity. Nicholas I sanctioned and leant financial assistance to the publication of this work, which was supervised by Count Strogonov, Mikhail Zagoskin, Ivan Snegirev and Aleksandr Vel'tman. "The edition was printed in small tirage and is rare complete" (Fekula 6194). Colas 138. A FINE SET. (7)
