Stroganov (1794-1882) was a state official and archaeologist, whose early years were spent as an active soldier. From 1837-74 he was president of the Society of Russian History and Antiquity. Nicholas I sanctioned and leant financial assistance to the publication of this work, which was supervised by Count Strogonov, Mikhail Zagoskin, Ivan Snegirev and Aleksandr Vel'tman.
