First Illustrated Edition of this enormously popular "pastoral comedy" which was first published in 1725 and first performed in a ballad opera version in 1747. [The supplemental eighteen pages of engraved songs are taken from this version.] Both a bookseller and an accomplished artist, David Allan had studied painting and engraving in Rome and worked in London as a portrait-painter before settling in Edinburgh, where he was known as "the Scottish Hogarth."
