Title: The Gentle Shepherd, A Pastoral Comedy Author: Ramsay, Allan Place: Glasgow Publisher: Printed by A. Foulis Date: 1788 Description: x, [ii], 111, 17, 18 pp. Portrait frontispiece and 12 aquatint plates by David Allan (4to) 11½x8¾, contemporary calf, later rebacking with spine laid down, spine gilt, red morocco spine label. First Illustrated Edition of this enormously popular "pastoral comedy" which was first published in 1725 and first performed in a ballad opera version in 1747. [The supplemental eighteen pages of engraved songs are taken from this version.] Both a bookseller and an accomplished artist, David Allan had studied painting and engraving in Rome and worked in London as a portrait-painter before settling in Edinburgh, where he was known as "the Scottish Hogarth."
