(Koran) The Koran, Commonly Called the Alcoran of Mohammed Author: Sale, George, translator Place Published: Bath Publisher: Printed by S. Hazard for J. Johnson, Vernor and Hood, et al. Date Published: 1795 Description: 2 volumes. xii, [2], 248, 266; [8], 519, [13] pp. With a folding copper-engraved map and 4 engraved plates (3 of them folding). (8vo) 21x12.8 cm (8¼x5"), tree calf boards re-backed in modern calf with gilt tooling and morocco lettering pieces, fresh endpapers. "New Edition". Sale's edition of the Koran, which first came out in 1734, was the first edition in English to be translated directly from the Arabic; and the best early vernacular translation. There was a 17th century English edition, but it derived from an already suspect French translation. The engravings are a folding map of Arabia; a folding plan and view of Mecca; and three genealogical tables, two of which are folding. J.F. Mitchell's copy with name gilt-stamped on front board of each volume. A few instances of marginalia in pencil. Condition: Some rubbing and wear to original boards; slight bump to a few leaves at lower right corner of Vol. I, slight dampstain to a few further leaves at lower right corner of Vol. I, title pages clipped at top right corner of Vol. I and along the complete top edge of Vol. II, stub tear to map of Arabia, minor ill-creasing to folding plates; very good. Item#: 368851 Headline: New Edition of Sale's Koran translation
