Sale's edition of the Koran, which first came out in 1734, was the first edition in English to be translated directly from the Arabic; and the best early vernacular translation. There was a 17th century English edition, but it derived from an already suspect French translation. The engravings are a folding map of Arabia; a folding plan and view of Mecca; and three genealogical tables, two of which are folding. J.F. Mitchell's copy with name gilt-stamped on front board of each volume. A few instances of marginalia in pencil. Condition: Some rubbing and wear to original boards; slight bump to a few leaves at lower right corner of Vol. I, slight dampstain to a few further leaves at lower right corner of Vol. I, title pages clipped at top right corner of Vol. I and along the complete top edge of Vol. II, stub tear to map of Arabia, minor ill-creasing to folding plates; very good.
