Date: 1801 Description: 2 volumes. xv, [1], 248, 264, [12]; [8], 519, [10] pp. With folding map, 3 genealogical tables (2 folding), folding view of the temple of Mecca. (8vo) 9x5¾, later three-quarter gilt-ruled morocco & marbled boards, spines tooled in gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Sale's edition of the Koran, which first came out in 1734, was the first edition in English to be translated directly from the Arabic; and the best early vernacular translation. There was a 17th century English edition, but it derived from an already suspect French translation. Lot Amendments Condition: A little rubbing to the boards; some darkening to untrimmed page edges, very good or better, an attractive copy. Item number: 172959
