His calling card lists the following Ex-Amateur Heavy-weight Boxing Champion of England, Olympic Finalist, Late Army Gym, Staff and Boxing Instructor to Aldershot Command, Referee, British Boxing Board of Control, Promoter. The 1908 Olympics were originally intended to have been held in Rome, but were moved to London at short notice after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906.
