Dean Conger The triumphant helicopter recovery of the first American in space, Alan Shepard, and "Freedom 7" capsule following the historic flight, Mercury Redstone 3, 5 May 1961 Vintage gelatin silver prints on fibre-based paper, 25.3 x 20.5 cm (10 x 8 in), BLACK NUMBERED NASA S-61-2393, with NASA caption on verso (NASA Headquarters), and a vintage gelatin silver print on early fibre-based Kodak paper, 13 x 10 cm (5 x 4 in), with KODAK VELOX PAPER watermarks on verso, (2) Footnotes: The photographs were taken by National Geographic photographer Dean Conger. Aglow with success, Alan Shepard crosses the deck of the carrier USS Lake Champlain (second photo) after splashing down near Bermuda and recovery of himself and the Freedom 7 capsule on board two separate helicopters (first photo). Shepard's 15-minute suborbital flight, made in the Mercury spacecraft behind him, helped convince John Kennedy to aim for the Moon.
