Beschreibung:

THOMAS DANIELL AND WILLIAM DANIELL Oriental Scenery . London: published for the authors, 1816 [but, Henry G. Bohn, c.1838-1841]. 6 volumes in one, 4° (365 x 268mm). Typographic titles to first and fourth parts serving as general titles to volumes. 150 engraved plates comprising 144 views and 6 title-pages, all hand-coloured. Later quarter green morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, vellum tips (hinges repaired). Later Bohn issue of the Daniells' great work with hand-coloured plates. The Daniells did try to issue the smaller edition of Oriental Scenery in 1816 with coloured plates, but were not satisfied with the results, with only a very few copies issued thus, the vast majority being with plain plates (see lot 201). In 1838 Bohn published a coloured version at £24. The present lot is bound in upright format with a new title-page and reset text. Abbey suggests this is a remainder, and Sutton a re-issue, both citing Bohn's Catalogue of Books (1841), but whole publication history is obscure. Abbey Travel 432; Sutton 13(A); Archer p.235.
