Title: The Peter Pan Portfolio...from "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens", by J.M. Barrie Author: Rackham, Arthur Place: London Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton Date: [1912] Description: Limitation leaf + title-page + 12 proof-size color plates, each window-mounted inside card-stock, with captioned guards. (Folio) 21¼x19¼, original half vellum and light green cloth, gilt-lettered, ribbon tie along spine. Limited Edition, No. 268 of 500 hand-numbered copies (which are numbered 101 to 600), signed by the publishers and by the engraver/printer on the limitation page. One of the most ambitious editions undertaken by Rackham. These 12 illustrations are considered to be Rackham's favorites from the 50 that appeared in the 1906 edition of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens (where they were printed much smaller). Few copies survive intact as the large size of the prints made them suitable for framing. These are the largest Rackham plates ever produced for a book publication. Latimore and Haskell, pp. 39-40. Lot Amendments Condition: Vellum re-coated with gray-colored paint, soiling and darkening to cloth; last page and first few pages with edge tears and wrinkled (including title and limitation leaf), sandwiched card-stock splitting open to first several, most have a warping effect (more so to first several) only slightly affecting plates, scattered finger-soiling; plates clean and bright; generally very good with near fine or better plates.
