TRUMAN, HARRY S., President . Typed letter signed ("Harry Truman") as President to Mr. & Mrs. Fred Bowman, The White House, Washington, D.C., 7 April 1952. One page, 4to, integral blank, matching postmarked envelope . Fine condition. "IT HAS BEEN A WONDERFUL PRIVILEGE TO SERVE MY COUNTRY IN THE PRESIDENCY" A very fine, revealing letter, in which Truman explains his decision not to seek another term, looks forward to becoming "Citizen Truman" again and speaks of his sense of the great public trust he, as President, has held since April 1945. "Many thanks for your kind sentiments and understanding thoughts concerning my decision not to be a candidate for reelection. Mrs. Truman and I both appreciate your good wishes a great deal and we will show your letter to Margaret [their daughter] when she returns from her concert tour. It will indeed be fine to enjoy life leisurely once more and, naturally, we are looking forward to the time when this privilege will be ours." "The confidence the people reposed in my leadership will always be a source of gratification to me and I am glad to have your words of commendation. It has been a wonderful privilege to serve my country in the Presidency and, of course, I shall not cease in my efforts for peace...."
