TWO SMALL-SWORDS The first late 17th Century, probably Dutch, the second Continental, circa 1750 The first with tapering blade of flattened hexagonal section (rust-stained) finely etched and gilt over half its length on each face with formal ornament enclosing putti and female portrait busts, the brass hilt with asymmetrical double-shell guard pierced with scrollwork and monster-heads, short diagonally recurved quillons with ram's head finials, arms, and globular pommel, cast and chased in relief with masks and Classical figures in niches, the grip (split) bound with twisted silver wire; the second made for a boy, with slender blade of hollow triangular section, chracteristic steel hilt cut with diagonal flutes heightened with encrusted silver dots and chiselled in low relief with gilt swags of flowers and foliage (gilding worn), the grip with its original binding of silver ribbon and plaited copper wire (some rust patination) 31¼in. (79.4cm.) and 28½in. (72.4cm.) blades (2)
