Father Pierre-Jean De Smet (1801-1873) was Superior of the Jesuit Indian missions of the Oregon country, and a towering figure in the early history of the Pacific Northwest. This book describes the missionaries' travels through the central Columbia River plateau, as well as a voyage upriver to the Columbia's headwaters in the Rocky Mountains. De Smet and his companions then continued north to the Athabasca River, before returning to Fort Vancouver by way of Fort Colville. The work was first published in English in 1847 and subsequently translated into French for European distribution. This posthumous third edition contains material not found in its predecessors, both English and French. Lot Amendments Condition: Boards worn, corners bumped, chip to top corner of front board; crack to front pastedown endpaper, light foxing; very good.
