Déjà au cours de son apprentissage, il excelle dans le modelage de bustes et la terre cuite deviendra très vite son médium de prédilection. Façonnée entièrement à la main, cette sculpture permet pleinement au spectateur de saisir toute l'ampleur de ce que l'artiste mentionne dans ses écrits lorsqu'il affirme «terre cuite, pièce unique». La virtuosité du modelage et la finesse d'exécution sont d'une qualité rare. Vu Cao Dam parvient à saisir la sérénité et la douceur de ces deux femmes qui se tiennent côte à côte, reliée par un geste d'amitié. Cette oeuvre est un très bel exemple de sa maîtrise technique ainsi que de sa capacité à retranscrire avec justesse grâce et féminité. Vũ Cao Đàm chuyển sang điêu khắc từ rất sớm. Ngay trong thời gian học, ông xuất sắc trong việc tạo tượng bán thân và đất nung sẽ nhanh chóng trở thành kỹ thuật được lựa chọn của ông.
