Woodcuts From Books of the 16th Century From German / Swiss / Dutch / French / Spanish And Italian Presses Author: Geisberg, Max Place: Olten Publisher: Weiss-Hesse Antiquariat Date: 1937 Description: 50 [1] pp. + 100 plates, tipped into matting. 48x37 cm (19x14½"), plain wrappers, mats loose as issued, together in cloth clamshell case. No. 44 of 50. Includes a wide range of leaves and illustrations, each labelled and the artist given where the publishers felt reasonable confidence. Artists named include Albrecht Dürer Jan Stephan van Calear, Hans Asper Hans Weiditz Wolf Traut two woodcuts after Hans Holbein the younger, and more. Religious scenes, bestiary illustrations, botanical woodcuts, and illustrations of Roman classics (especially Ovid) make up the majority of the leaves. Lot Amendments Condition: Cloth case frayed at edges, foxed; a few smudges and small closed tears to wrappers; minor toning and wear to leaves, some paper repair, altogether very good.
