ZUALLART, Jean (1541-1634). Il devotissimo viaggio di Gerusalemme . Rome: Francesco Zanetti and Giacomo Ruffinelli, 1587. 4° (219 x 155mm). Engraved title within an architectural border, full-page plate of author portrait and calligraphic verse address to Zuallart by Julius Roscius, and 51 engraved maps, plans and views, 2 of which are full-page, by Natal Bonifacio, woodcut historiated and factotum initials and headpieces, typographic-ornament head- and tailpieces. (Some spotting, some light browning, heavier in about 9 quires, lower blank margin of title renewed, with light abrasion at base of title plate, a few characters on p.71 uninked.) Modern vellum-backed pastepaper boards. FIRST EDITION. Zuallart undertook a 6-month pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1586. His account describes the cities and sites he encountered, from Venice, to Crete, Cyprus, Jaffa, Bethlehem, Jerusalem and other places in the Holy Land, including Tripoli. The maps, plans and views of places and sites which illustrate the account were made by the author himself during his voyage. They reappeared in later editions of Zuallart's work, and copies of them were used to illustrate other accounts of the Holy Land. Leaf Aaa2r with correct signature mark and other corrections, as described by Mortimer. Adams Z-190; Blackmer 1873 (1595 edition); Mortimer, Harvard Italian 559.
