Description During the evolution of the 290, the Mercedes-Benz 320 was intended to help bridge the gap between Mercedes-Benz’s large- and medium-sized vehicles. The platform was very versatile, and it was offered with either a long- or short-wheelbase chassis. This allowed the 320 to be sold in a variety of different body styles, including a saloon, cabriolet, roadster, and an open touring car, all of which provided its passengers with the levels both of performance and comfort that customers had come to expect of Mercedes-Benz. The Mercedes-Benz 320 series was introduced in 1937 and would become available in a wide range of body styles including a 4-door sedan, 6-seat touring car and three different cabriolets. Powered by a 78-horsepower 3.2-liter side-valve straight-six, the 320 featured all-independent suspension and hydraulic brakes front and rear. The 320 was, in any body style, an elegant automobile that was also well built and a respectable performer with a top speed of over 80 miles per hour. It also offered the style of some of Mercedes’ larger cars, but at a much more reasonable price. The three cabriolets were particularly attractive, and included the 2-door short wheelbase Cabriolet A, the 2-door, 4-window Cabriolet B and the 4-door, 4-window Cabriolet D. This 1938 320 Cabriolet B, on a long wheelbase chassis, is certainly one of the most elegant body styles offered, particularly as it features four seats and windows with two doors. Before coming to Europe the car had resided in the United States, first in New Hampshire and then Pennsylvania. The engine and drive-train all appear to be comprised of original components and have been cosmetically restored. The exterior paint has just undergone a complete respray, and is now resplendent in period black over grey. The bodywork and chrome all appear to be in very good condition as well, and its chrome wire wheels are shod with blackwall tyres. The interior is in wonderful condition with the leather and carpets showing virtually no sign of wear whatsoever. The darkly stained woodwork has clearly been very well maintained and is of the highest quality, which is synonymous with the name Mercedes-Benz. With its 3,208cc inline six-cylinder engine with dual carburettors and four-speed manual transmission, this care is truly a joy to drive. This car is presented in very nice cosmetic condition. With its immaculate wood trim, red leather, and recent respray, this is an attractive and iconic pre-war classic that fits in well with the most elegant era in automotive design.
