Despite its initial success, sales of the original Austin Healey 100 had begun to decline by the mid 1950’s and so the model was revamped as the 100/6 using the BMC 2.6 litre C-Series six cylinder engine replacing the four cylinder Austin Atlantic engine. This six-cylinder, pushrod engine produced 102bhp, twelve horsepower more than its predecessor, though the inevitable weight gain meant that there was little improvement in performance, the cars top speed remaining around 103mph. At the same time the wheelbase was increased by two inches from 7’ 6” to 7’ 8”, which enabled the inclusion of two seats in the rear of the BN4 variant. Although stylistically very similar to the earlier model the 100/6 was nevertheless easily distinguishable by its ‘crinkle’ radiator grille and the bonnet top air intake. In 1957 an improved engine became available and this 117bhp unit was fitted to all the newly introduced BN6 two-seater roadsters. Top speed improved to 111mph and 1.7 seconds was cut from the 0-60mph time. This lovely Austin Healey 100/6 BN4 was subject to a complete restoration in the late 1980’s, a time when original parts were plentiful and restorations were simpler to complete to a high standard, on completion the odometer was zeroed. Since the restoration this car has covered just under 5,000 miles, this is partly due to the car being purchased in the early 1990’s by John Saunders, the owner of the Stondon Transport Museum, the largest private collection of motor vehicles and other motoring exhibits in the UK, the museum closed in 2015. Sold out of the collection in 2007 and recommissioned since then, this car has rarely been used but maintained to a high standard. Fitted with the original ‘ridged’ bonnet and early chrome bonnet air duct, this 100/6 BN4 is finished in Old English White with red interior, matching red hood, tonneau cover, side screens and has recently had new chrome wire wheels with new tyres fitted. The car is supplied with a V5 registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires in July 2021 and a file containing invoices and previous MoT test certificates confirming the very low mileage since the restoration. This Healey has been described by the vendors as running and driving beautifully and is a real pleasure to use and own.
