Launched in 1962, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III and its Bentley S3 equivalent employed the 6.2 litre aluminium-alloy V8 engine first introduced in the Silver Cloud II although with larger carburettors, new distributor and raised compression ratio. It also came with a four-speed GM derived automatic gearbox as standard equipment. Most obvious among many changes from the preceding models were the adoption of four headlamp lighting, the absence of sidelights from the wing tops and a slightly lower radiator shell. Inside there was improved accommodation with separate front seats and increased room for rear passengers. Notable as the last mainstream Rolls-Royce to employ a separate chassis, the Silver Cloud III remained in production until superseded by the unitary-construction Silver Shadow in late 1965. The Cloud represented a supremely elegant design and is often regarded as the last true Rolls-Royce. This lefthand drive Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III standard steel salon was ordered by the main Rolls-Royce distributor for the USA, J.S. Inskip Inc., New York and delivered in August 1965 for the princely sum of £3,393 plus extras. It is finished in the original colour scheme of Sand over Sable with matching beige leather and fawn West of England cloth headlining. Extras fitted when new were electric windows, electric aerial and 'Sundym' glass. The vendor purchased the car from Captain William Ruble, US Navy, who kept the car in California from the early 1990's, the previous owner was his father Admiral Ruble who was in possession of the Rolls-Royce in 1973. This Silver Cloud III is supplied with a V5C registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires on the 6 th November 2013 and copies of the chassis cards and history files from the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts' Club. A couple of State of California registration cards, invoices and correspondence going back to 1993, when Captain Ruble left the car in storage in California, are also present. This extremely original example is in excellent condition throughout and is properly maintained and stored when not in use.
