1966 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL Pagoda Lot Number 186 Registration KPG 651C Chassis Number 11304222013768 Engine Number 12798122003164 Odometer reading 136,000 miles Estimate £62,000 - £73,000 Result Sold - £88,296 Print details Send this to a friend 7 more images The Mercedes-Benz W113 roadsters, designed by Paul Bracq, were produced from 1963 through to 1971 with their distinctive 'Pagoda' hardtop roof giving them their contemporary nickname. All models feature an inline six-cylinder engine with multi-port fuel injection using a mechanical pump system adapted from the diesel engine. All are rear-wheel drive and equipped with independent rear suspension, a feature that greatly improved road handling. It made its debut at the prestigious Geneva Motor Show in March 1963, where Technical Director Fritz Nallinger introduced it as follows, "It was our aim to create a very safe and fast sports car with high performance which, despite its sports characteristics, provides a high degree of travelling comfort." Mercedes-Benz Chief Engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut, who was as competent behind the wheel as most racing drivers, demonstrated the capabilities of the 230 SL on a tight short race track near Montreux in 1963, where he put up a best lap time of 47.5 seconds and, incidentally, out-performed Mike Parkes in his Ferrari 250GT. This fabulous UK righthand drive Mercedes-Benz 230 SL has for the last six years been on display across Mercedes-Benz showrooms in North London. Owned by the Mercedes-Benz Retail Group UK, it was purchased in 2011 as a fully restored example and since led the pampered life attending press events and gracing modern day showrooms including Mercedes-Benz world Museum. Finished in silver with complimentary blue trim in excellent order. This automatic example has been subject to a lengthy and not inexpensive restoration, which has been detailed in photographs and a significant history file and included bare metal re-spay and full re-trim. Recent mechanical and engine re-commissioning has been carried out by classic Mercedes specialists Roger Edwards and been on display in the Mercedes-Benz Colindale showroom. Offered with a matching factory hard top, blue 'as new' soft top and supplied with a V5C registration document, an MoT test certificate which expires on 7th February 2018 and substantial history. This 230 SL Pagoda has been prepared to be a car worthy of selling the Mercedes-Benz brand and therefore not only a usable example but importantly a fabulous blue chip investment with the inevitable provenance of Mercedes ownership.
