In 1638, a group of promoters obtained from Charles II a proprietary patent to North America between the 31st and 36th parallels. The proprietors named the planned colony Carolina in honor of their benefactor, the king. At the direction or Anthony Ashley Cooper, one of the proprietors and chancellor of the exchequer, Locke drew up the "Fundamental Constitutions." His advanced proposals for religious toleration were largely adopted in the colony. A foundation document in the political development of the American colonies. Ink name of T.
