Beschreibung:

An Exceptional Miniature Torah scroll [late nineteenth century] Manuscript scroll (Height of parchment: 4 in.; 101 mm:: Height of text: 3 in.; 80 mm). Written in ink on parchment, in an exceptionally beautiful and precise Ashkenazic "Ari Zal" (Nusach S'fard) script; Vavei ha-Amudim; 42 lines, 264 columns on 32 membranes, sewn with gidin; partial pink silk backing, unconnected to parchment. Mounted on silver rollers. Scroll is accompanied by a silver eighteenth century Polish-style, miniature Torah Shield (with four engraved, reversible portion plaques), border matched on chased silver rollers with stepped domed tops below bud finials (8 cm.), a silver pointer (12 cm.), and a maroon side-opening, satin-lined, velvet mantle with snap closures, featuring gold-thread embroidered border, crown, and Hebrew letters Kaf and Tav (for Keter Torah)and three colored glass beads; satin lining badly frayed. A later linen binder is inscribed with a multi-colored inscription suggesting a noble provenance. Housed within a velvet-lined, glass-fronted, wooden box with brass clasp and catch. This Torah Scroll is lacking the first and last letters of the Torah, the initial "bet" in Bereishit and the final "lamed" in Yisrael. These letters have been purposely omitted by the scribe in order to bestow a special honor on the patron of a Scroll. By inserting these letters, the patron completes the scroll and accrues the merit and spiritual reward of having fulfilled the mitzvah of "writing" the scroll. Although most miniature scrolls omit the traditional tagin and zaynin embellishments (crowns on the letters) due to lack of space, the present scroll meticulously and exactingly includes many of these in each column when space permits, lending an added measure of beauty and elegance to this exceptional scroll.
