IRAN, 19TH CENTURY
AN IMPRESSIVE PAIR OF QAJAR CANDLESTICKS ( SHAMDAN ) IRAN, 19TH CENTURY Rising from wide trumpet foot through cylindrical shaft with upper and lower pronounced bosses to widening collar, with separate widely flaring mouth, the body with two applied scrolling handles with dragon head terminals, the foot and mouth decorated with elegant quatrefoil cartouches engraved with animal combat scenes reserved against brass ground, above and below bands of scrolling flowering vine, the body with a wide lattice of lozenges formed in openwork scrolls, each containing a quatrefoil cartouche with demons or scenes of figures and animals in combat, above and below this engraved bands with single figures in ogival cratouches alternated with further combat scenes, the top of the shaft with ogival figural cartouches set against a ground of openwork flowering vine and between minor openwork bands of scrolling vine, handles slightly loose, otherwise good condition 22¾in.
