APOLLINAIRE, Guillaume (1880-1918). [Méditations Esthétiques]. Les Peintres Cubistes . Paris: Eugene Figuiere, 1913. 4° (231 x 180mm). 45 black and white photographic reproductions [not 46 as wrongly stated on the title]. (Text leaves lightly browned in the margins.) Original yellow wrappers printed in black, bound into 20th-century quarter vellum, gilt-lettered label on the spine (wrappers with small repairs, binding rubbed at the corners). Provenance : Guillaume Apollinaire (presentation inscription to:) -- Jean Vuichon. A FUNDAMENTAL STUDY OF CUBIST ART. PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY APOLLINAIRE TO HIS FRIEND JEAN VUICHON, AND WITH TWO SIGNED LETTERS FROM APOLLINAIRE AND A SIGNED NOTE FROM ARTIST MARIE LAURENCIN these letters all tipped-in; this copy a review copy, with a notice laid-in and with the wrappers perforated 'service' as customary for review copies. Doctor Vuichon assisted Laurencin's mother when she was taken ill; one of Apollinaire's letters discusses the illness, and the other accepts an invitation to dinner, Apollinaire noting that Vuichon's 'thoughts on the Cubists are very judicious'. Laurencin is the subject of one of Apollinaire's essays in this collection; their romantic relationship, began in 1907, ended earlier in 1913. Other essays consider Picasso, Braque, Metzinger, Léger, Picabia, Duchamp, and others. The front wrapper and title show a possibly-fictitious printed statement that this copy is from the seventh edition.
