BIBLE, English. The Holy Bible, Containing the Old Testament and the New. Cambridge: John Baskerville 1763. 2 parts bound in 5 volumes, large 2 o (488 x 318 mm). Ruled in red. Contemporary English red goatskin gilt in style of Richard Wier, the covers with a wide gilt border built up with floral tools and a backward-looking bird, spine elaborately gilt in seven compartments, two with gilt lettered black morocco spine labels, the others with a lozenge made from small tools and floral corner tools, gilt edges (some rubbing to edges). Provenance : David Nisbet (bookplate, and 5 page biographical notes on family history beginning in 1390 and continued to 1796); Irwin Laughlin (bookplate); purchased from Lucien Goldschmidt, 23 April 1959. THE FAMOUS BASKERVILLE BIBLE PRINTED IN 1,250 COPIES ONLY. This edition "has always been regarded as Baskerville's magnum opus, and his most magnificent as well as his most characteristic specimen" (T.B. Reed, A History of the Old English Letter Founderies , p.279). The wide floral border of the binding follows many of the characteristics mentioned in Ramsden's article "Richard Wier and Count MacCarthy Reagh," The Book Collector, Winter 1953.
