FIRST EDITION, second issue with text to the index. This elaborately illustrated volume is the earliest attempt to describe and illustrate every known musical instrument, both ancient and modern. It includes the "Flauto traversier," "Serpentone," "Organo," "Tromba Marina," "Cembalo," "Chitarro Spagnola," exotic instruments like the "Violino persiano," "Tamburro de Batam," "Instrumento di Affricani," and several New World examples like "Donna Brasiliano in ballo" and "Trombo della Florida." The double folding plate depicts the elaborate multi- keyboard "Galleria armonica" in the Rome palace of Signor Verospi. Hirsch iv 1476; Brunet 1, 1086 (calls for only 136 plates).
