Frontispiece engraving (King David with harp) by Arnold van Westerhout engraved plate of Psalm 150 after Stefano Sparigioni, letterpress text with woodcut ornaments, 177 pp., 151 full-page engraved plates depicting musical instruments (plates 12/13 and 13/14 on single plates, two extra bis plates facing p.95 and p.138, 2 plates numbered 77). At end, an eight-page "Indice delli Capi." (First gathering a bit loose, scattered spotting to a few leaves, old patch to lower margin of pp.143-144 not affecting text, small tear to plate cxviii mended.) Contemporary mottled vellum, gilt-lettered morocco spine label (rebacked in matching vellum, front hinge cracked); fleece-lined buckram protective case by Lisa K. Vershbow. FIRST EDITION, second issue with text to the index. This elaborately illustrated volume is the earliest attempt to describe and illustrate every known musical instrument, both ancient and modern. It includes the "Flauto traversier," "Serpentone," "Organo," "Tromba Marina," "Cembalo," "Chitarro Spagnola," exotic instruments like the "Violino persiano," "Tamburro de Batam," "Instrumento di Affricani," and several New World examples like "Donna Brasiliano in ballo" and "Trombo della Florida." The double folding plate depicts the elaborate multi- keyboard "Galleria armonica" in the Rome palace of Signor Verospi. Hirsch iv 1476; Brunet 1, 1086 (calls for only 136 plates).
