AN EXCEPTIONAL AND HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT, LARGE 18K GOLD SELF-WINDING MINUTE REPEATING ON GONG, HOURS AND QUARTERS À TOC POCKET WATCH WITH LEVER ESCAPEMENT AND BIMETALLIC BALANCE CONSTRUCTED ON THE PRINCIPLES OF THE GARDE-TEMPS, SECTORAL POWER-RESERVE INDICATION AND LARGE SECONDS
SIGNED BREGUET, BROUGHT TO BREGUET FOR REPAIR FOR LORD SPENCER ON 1 NIVOSE AN 11 (22 DECEMBER 1802), SERVICE COMPLETED IN EARLY MESSIDOR (AROUND 20 JUNE 1803) AND RETURNED TO LONDON BY MISS RECORDON FOR MR. RECORDON, BREGUET’S LONDON AGENT
Movement: Gilt brass three quarter plate with two going barrels, tandem winding, straight-line lever escapement, four-arm brass and special alloy compensation balance, meantime adjustment nuts, blued steel balance spring, half-ogival oscillating platinum winding weight, stop mechanism to prevent overwinding, à toc repeating for the hours and quarters with a hammer on the inside of the case, repeating the minutes with a further hammer on a single gong activated by depressing a pull-and-twist piston in the pendant, movement ring engraved “Inventé par Breguet à Paris”
Dial: White enamel
Case: Form Collier with indistinct maker’s mark, possibly the early mark of Joly, punch-numbered 47, back with engine-turned in grains d'orge pattern, the band with wavy-line pattern, 56.3 mm. diam.
With: Breguet short gold chain and ratchet key
Remark: Exceptional minute repeating perpétuelle once owned by the 2nd Earl Spencer (1758-1834), great-great-great-great-grandfather of Diana, Princess of Wales
