Printed Senate Doc. No. 101 (35th Congress, 1st session), 1856-1857. 8vo, 6 numbered pp (last leaf blank). Cassius Clay petitioned the Senate for reimbursement for a judgement against him for an incident that occurred just before the Kentucky unit left for the Mexican War. They were ordered to round up some deserters who were reportedly staying at "a house of ill fame." The first group sent to find them were fired upon, so they returned to camp to report the situation and get reinforcements. By the time that group arrived, and, on Clay's orders, broke down all the doors simultaneously, the deserters, if they had been there, were gone. However, Clay found on his return from the war that the woman who owned the boarding house sued him for damages to her property, which he paid, then asked the government for reimbursement since he had acted on their orders. There is a second demand for reimbursement for items lost on a train which Clay was riding from Monterey to Saltillo by order of Gen. Marshall, then to Palomas by order of Gen. Butler, and to Encarnacion by order of Maj. Gaines. "Under these circumstances all the baggage and property which he had with him in Mexico were lost,..." with an estimate value of $1370. Condition: Disbound. Otherwise excellent.
