CHURCHILL, Winston S. Winston S. Churchill, His Complete Speeches, 1897-1963 . Edited by Robert Rhodes James. New York: Chelsea House Publishers, 1974. 8 volumes. 4 o . Half-titles, frontispiece photos. Red cloth stamped in gilt with Churchill crest on upper cover, spine in gilt and black. FIRST EDITION. An impressive and "indispensable" collection (Langworth) of Churchill's oratory, comprising some 9,000 pages of printed text. A team of researchers combed public records and newspapers to find every public address made by Churchill, but they fell short of completeness, as some of Churchill's youthful speeches were not included and even Hansard gave up reporting some of Churchill's early efforts in the Commons, noting he was "inaudible"! (Langworth, A Connoisseur's Guide to the Books of Sir Winston Churchill , 349-350). (8)
