COOPER, James Fenimore. The Last of the Mohicans; A Narrative of 1757. Philadelphia: H.C. Carey & I. Lea, 1826. 2 volumes, 12 o (175 x 103 mm). (Title-page of volume one torn at top with loss affecting the word The , some browning and one or two spots.) Contemporary half diced russia, marbled boards, spines gilt-ruled in six compartments, lettered and numbered in two (joints a bit weak, some corners slightly scuffed); quarter red morocco gilt slipcase. Provenance : J. Sanger (signature); James Fenimore Cooper (bookplates). FIRST EDITION FROM THE LIBRARY OF COOPER'S GRANDSON JAMES FENIMORE COOPER, and with the ownership inscription of a member of the Sanger family. The Sangers of Sangersfield are as old and established a family in Oneida, N.Y. as the Coopers of Cooperstown in Otsego. With the following points: volume one lacking pagination on p. 71, p. 89 misnumbered 93, p. 243 reads "XIV" for "XVI", last "i" is present in pagination on p. vii. The copyright notices read "a Book" in both volumes, with the blank conjugate with the title-page in volume two, and with the terminal blanks in each volume.
