COOPER, James Fenimore. The Oak Openings; or, The Bee-Hunter. New York: Burgess, Stringer & Co, 1848. 2 volumes, 12 o (200 x 117 mm). (Lightly browned, some spotting, p. 110 torn crossing the text.) Orignal brown printed wrappers (back wrapper detached on volume one and lacking on volume two, lightly soiled, a bit chipped) modern quarter red morocco gilt slipcase. Provenance : Godfrey (signature). FIRST EDITION. Published almost simultaneously with the London edition. BAL 3929; Sabin 16489; Spiller and Blackburn 48. [ With :] FAGAN, John. Autograph invoice signed ("John Fagan"), to J. Fenimore Cooper,Esq., Philadelphia, 15 July 1848. Half-page 4 o ledger paper . Fagan charges Cooper a total of $352.08 for: "15 stereotyping "OAK OPENINGS", viz. ...62 hours alterations... ...extra proofs for England... ...10 boxes for Plates..." In return Fagan "Rec'd, July 22, 1848, of J. Fenimore Cooper, Esq. his note for above am t. dated July 22, 1848, at 6 mos." BAL records that the New York and London editions were both published at roughly the same time: the 19th August in London and between the 19th and the 21st in New York. That Cooper sent his London publishers locally printed sheets from which to set up their presses is well known, that Cooper was sometimes slow to pay his creditors equally so. Fagan is recorded as the stereotyper for many of Cooper's works published by Lea and Blanchard in Philadelphia. (3)
