Engraved title, portrait of Ferdinand by Neeffs after van Thulden (repaired at bottom affecting lower image and caption), 42 engraved plates (plates 17-19 and 20-22 joined) and 46 engraved illustrations in text after Peter Paul Rubens by Theodoor Van Thulden (a few plates cropped, plates 12 and 16 with tear in lower margin, plate 20-22 with repaired tear crossing image). Provenance : acquired from George Staack, 1963. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, of the only fully illustrated book by Peter Paul Rubens and "PERHAPS THE MOST SPLENDIDLY ILLUSTRATED BOOK OF THE WHOLE 17TH CENTURY..." (Hofer). The first issue is without the date on the title-page, and the colophon dated 1641. The work celebrates the entry of Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Spain (1609-1641) as Governor in Antwerp on May 15th, 1635 and as victor of the battle of Nördlingen, where the Catholic Imperial army, won a great victory over the combined Protestant armies of Sweden and their German allies. The splendid illustrations after Rubens include the engraved title with a portrait of Philip IV, a portrait of Ferdinand on horseback (after Rubens by Paulus Pontius , a view of Antwerp with the entry of the troops, triumphal arches, allegorical scenes, fireworks, and a bird's-eye-view of Antwerp. "Rubens' designs brought a new vigour to the trappings of a joyous entry and set a standard against which all future such occasions in Europe were measured... The Pompa introitus Ferdinandi stands today, as it did then, as one of the primary examples of a major artist working as a festival designer. And the book which commemorates the event is perhaps the most famous and magnificent of all fête books" ( Festivities: Ceremonies and Celebrations in Western Europe 1500-1790 , Brown University, number 43).
