Goethe’) to an unidentified prince [Prince Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach], Weimar, 18 October 1826, courteously submitting a request that the recipient should allow the artist [Johann Joseph] Schmeller, the bearer of the letter, to draw his portrait, one page, 4to , laid onto an album leaf . Provenance : from the autograph collection of Sir Francis Clare Ford (1828-1899).

Provenance : from the autograph collection of Sir Francis Clare Ford (1828-1899). ‘ gedachte nach Höchst Ihro Rückkunft eine bescheidene Bitte mündlich vorzutragen, welche schriftlich zu thun ich mich gegenwärtig in Hoffnung gnädigster Genehmigung entschließe. Es ist nämlich die: Höchst-dieselben mögen Ueberbringern dieses, dem geschickten Künstler Schmeller, erlauben Ihr Bildniß zu zeichnen, damit es, auch in persönliches Abwesenheit, uns durch seine Gegenwart erfreue’. Goethe’s letters at this period are full of requests to members of his circle to allow Schmeller to take their portraits.
