GRANT, Ulysses S. (1822-1885). President . Autograph letter signed ("U.S. Grant") to S. Bishop & Company, Washington, 22 June 1865. 1¼ pages, 8vo, Army Headquarters stationery, integral blank. GRANT ADMIRES A PORTRAIT OF GEORGE WASHINGTON. Two months after forcing Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox, General Ulysses S. Grant accepts a cleverly accomplished printed portrait of the first President. He writes: "I am just in receipt of the portrait of Washington, beautifully executed by the arrangements of the words of the Declaration of Independence so as to make them give the portrait which you have been kind enough to send me. I shall prize this very highly and will have it framed to hand down to my children as something to be revered." In all likelihood, the portrait that Grant received was the lithograph edition published by A. Hageboeck of Davenport, Iowa between 1855 and 1860 which featured the calligraphic words of the Declaration in various degrees of boldness to create a portrait of Washington. During his spare time, the General enjoyed drawing and painting which presumably heightened his appreciation of art. Gifts such as this were not unusual for the man who, in the eyes of much of the North, saved the Union. Three years later, Grant would be elected President of the United States.
