If they have not yet arrived you will please give him an opportunity of communicating with the French counsel at Richmond." -- Manuscript letter copy from Grant to Stanton, in pencil, 3pp., 8 o , 23 January 1865. "Let North Carolina do her duty and all will be well. For Gods sake let the legislature come up to the crises - Don't despair of the Republic. Persons who left Wilmington on Wednesday say that our forces had fallen back within eight miles of the town and that Gen. Terry had demanded a surrender giving Gen. Bragg until yesterday to decide what he would do." -- 4 manuscript telegrams from Grant to Ord. (2)
