GRANT, ULYSSES S., President . Autograph letter signed ("U.S. Grant Lt. Gen") as Commander of the Union Army, TO SECRETARY OF WAR EDWIN M. STANTON, City Point, Virginia, 24 February 1865. 1 page, 4to, on printed stationery of "Head Quarters Armies of the United States," very faint mat burn from old frame, two small punctures, one discreetly repaired from verso. GRANT REPORTS FROM THE RICHMOND SIEGE ON CONFEDERATE DESERTERS Only seven weeks before Lee's surrender, General Grant reports to Stanton on the growing numbers of Confederate deserters. "The number of deserters in twenty-four hours up to 12 last night was 87 to the Army of the Potomac and about 40 to the Army of the James. There is an average of about 12 per day in addition received at Norfolk. Forty-five have come into the A[rmy of the] P[otomac] since 12 last night..." The increasing rebel desertions were a source of concern to Grant's counterpart, Robert E. Lee, who wrote on the very same day to the Confederate War Department about the "alarming number of desertions that are now occurring in the army" (E.B. Long, The Civil War Day by Day, p.643).
