GREEK APULIAN CERAMIC RED FIGURE OINOCHOE Circa 5th-3rd century BC Attributed to the Stuttgart group, a ceramic red figure ware oinochoe with pedestal base, mastoid body, funicular neck and trefoil spout; the handle a broad ribbed strap; the body depicting a reclining female in a girdled chiton with her hair in a beribboned kekryphalos , supporting a rectangular casket in her right hand, patterned situla in her left, surrounded by rosettes, dotted sprays and a patterned scarf in the field, with palmette to the rear; restricted use of white and ochre points; ovolo motifs in ochre to the neck with white slash motifs above; at the junction of handle and spout, a human mask with painted palmette above. Ceramic, 1.2 kg, 38 cm (15"). Very fine condition, restored. Provenance English private collection, acquired in London between 1997-2002; ex Bonham's October, 2005 lot 309. Literature A.D.
