GREEK APULIAN RED FIGURE WARE BELL KRATER Circa 4th century BC. A large red figure ware bell krater of Magna Graecian (Apulian) workmanship, with pedestal base, bell-shaped body and broad rim; the rim with red rings to the inner and outer edges; the body decorated with two large palmettes separating figural scenes; Side A - an advancing female in a peplos and stephane, with a staff in her right had and situla in her left facing a naked male holding a platter in his right hand and staff in his left, with a stephane in his hair and a cloak draped over his left arm; Side B - two standing males with draped cloaks and staves, facing each other over a palmette with objects in the field; the use of ochre and white slip restricted to Side A, applied sparingly to the details of costume and surroundings. Ceramic, 1.9 kg, 29 cm. Fine condition, restored. Provenance From the estate of a deceased North Country collector, acquired over a 30 year period from the early 1970's; ex Ancient Art, London.
