GREEK APULIAN RED-FIGURE LEKANIS Late 4th century BC A ceramic red figure ware lekanis of Magna Graecian (Southern Italian) workmanship; the conical lid with running wave pattern to the outer rim, the upper face decorated to either side with the face of a lady of fashion; each wearing a necklace of yellow beads and a circular earring with pendant drops; each with the hair dressed in a decorated sakkos with stephane at the hairline; between the two faces, two large palmettes, each flanked with scrolling details; the tondo with red rim and radiate black line pattern; the base with running wave pattern to the upper rim, loop handles and a pedestal food with red band. 1.3 kg, 21.5 cm diameter without handles (8 1/4"). Fine condition. Provenance From the estate of a late North Country collector, acquired over a 30 year period from the early 1970s.
