GREEK APULIAN RED FIGURE WARE LEKANIS Circa 4th century BC. A ceramic red figure ware lekanis of Magna Graecian (Apulian) workmanship; the vessel with shallow bowl, loop handles and pedestal foot, vertical leaves to the outer rim and red disc to the tondo; the lid conical with running wave pattern to the rim, tall lid with stepped discoid handle and radiating lines to the centre, the surface with two large palmette motifs flanking figural scenes: Side A - a recumbent male in loose robe with sceptre in his left hand, objects in the field; Side B - a seated female with loose robe and stephane, a fan in her left hand, objects in the field; the painting handled delicately with subtle use of ochre and white slip over red to establish depth and texture. Ceramic, 1.7 kg, 24 cm. Very fine condition. Provenance From the estate of a deceased North Country collector, acquired over a 30 year period from the early 1970's; ex Alex Szolin, Ancient & Orient.
